Crenshaw Corridor/ Aviation Station and Parking Lot

Client: Integral to the Aviation Station and medians along the Crenshaw corridor, our design approach included the implementation of the SUSMP/LID requirements for Low Impact Development to mitigate stormwater runoff, foster drought tolerant and native plant materials. Other key issues included the incorporation/maintenance of existing trees, coordination with evolving Master Plan in development by the City of Los Angeles, compressed schedule and coordination to meet construction requirements to ensure availability and consistency of quantities of selected trees. Plant material selection was coordinated with the Community to complement the traditional drought tolerant selections on the east side of the rail lines and achieve maximum color all year around. Exhibits including visual simulations, plans and sections demonstrating the proposed project aesthetic were developed and presented to build community consensus. Drip irrigation consistent with the Governor’s Executive Order for water conservation was used to ensure plant establishment and provide for supplemental water during the dry seasons.

This facility in Huntington Beach is an innovative training center that develops the learning and technical skills of both cadets and students by providing an environment that best balance quality enhancements of both building design and landscape.

LCI achieved this goal by creating a park scenario for passive recreation, biddle and grinder courses for physical training activities and memorial as a focal point next to the building’s main entry. A number of prominent trees were protected through strict construction and management procedures while applicable stormwater techniques such as Modular Wetland Biofiltration systems were considered for the project.
