Ridge Route Linear Park
Laguna Woods, CA
Ridge Route Linear Park was an undeveloped right-of-way in Laguna Woods that the City planned to develop as a linear park. Because the area being developed was technically a right-of-way for the adjacent Ridge Route Road, the park was developed with a temporary designation.
There was an existing small parking lot, which serviced a dog park called ‘A Place for Paws.’ The park design incorporates a redesigned and larger (by 15%) dog park and parking lot to service that facility. There are two distinct areas of the dog park – one for large dogs and the other for small dogs. Both sections are designed with a special ‘vestibule’ ingress/egress area as a transition for leashing and un-leashing pets. Other features of the park include an eight foot-wide decomposed granite bike/pedestrian pathway, Life Cycle exercise centers, community art and garden areas with benches and a continuous bio-swale throughout the park to capture and purify rainwater runoff. The plant palette is established as significantly drought tolerant and is planned to incorporate a variety of California native materials in an effort to reduce irrigation water consumption.
